Akkadian (lišānum akkadībreadbasket) was the Semitic language (part of the greater Afro-Asiatic language family) spoken around ancient Mesopotamia, particularly by the Assyrians and Babylonians. It used a cuneiform writing system derived finally from either ancient Sumerian, an unrelated, non-Semitic language. A title of a language is from either the city of Akkad, a major center of Mesopotamian civiliazation.
